Which French certificate is the best to get a job?

As with English, to work in a job that requires French, you need to have a qualification that proves your knowledge of the language. We are all familiar with the First Certificate for English, but do you know what the equivalent is for French? Whatever your job objective, one of these qualifications will suit your needs perfectly:

  • DILF (Diplôme initial de langue française): 

This is one of the most important French diplomas to validate the knowledge acquired during your first steps with this language. It certifies that you have mastered a basic level (A1, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

  • DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) and DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française): 

The DELF is one of the most important French diplomas for finding a job, thanks to its popularity around the world. Its aim is to certify the oral and written expression and comprehension skills of foreigners in French. It consists of 4 diplomas certifying basic and intermediate levels (A1, A2, B1 and B2 respectively).

It is one of the most important French diplomas for finding a job, as it certifies that you have mastered the French language at its most advanced levels (C1 and C2). It is also known in the academic world for being a certification that allows foreign students to access French universities without having to take previous tests to test their language skills.

This exam certifies all levels of the CEFR but it is not a multi-level test, you have to take a different test for each level. The DELF is the acronym for the A1, A2, B1 and B2 level tests. The DALF, on the other hand, is for C1 and C2. To pass them, you must test your skills in reading and listening comprehension, and written and oral expression.

Unlike other diplomas, DELF/DALF has no expiry date. It can be used to accredit the level indefinitely. In addition, it is internationally recognised, so it can be used in all types of institutions around the world. At the same time, it also has numerous authorised centres where you can take the exam, also in Spain.

  1. TCF (Test de connaissance du français):

This French language qualification measures your linguistic level from the most basic to the most advanced in the French language. Only if you already have some previous knowledge of the language. It will be very useful in situations where you want to quickly validate your knowledge and for the certificate you have obtained to be reliable in order to facilitate your job search.

The certificate is valid for two years and you can check the expiry date on the certificate itself. In addition, there are three different types of exams depending on the reason for which you need to accredit your level. 

  1. General TCF: the certificate that can be used for personal, work or academic purposes. It is a bit more extensive and covers vocabulary and grammar in all fields. 
  2. TCF pour la DAP: this test is more specific and is aimed at students who want to study for a degree at a French university or school of architecture. The tests are similar, as you have to take a test of oral and written comprehension, language skills and a final part of written expression. 
  3. TCF pour l'ANF: this test is specifically designed to prove your level of French as part of an application to acquire French nationality. This certificate is not the same as the one required in Quebec.
  • CCP (Paris Chamber of Commerce)

The diplomas of the Paris Chamber of Commerce are certificates attesting to knowledge of French in specific professional areas. They evaluate competences in the professional world of hospitality, law, business, science and medicine or secretarial work. The levels are in accordance with the CEFR.  The parts that are evaluated are comprehension and written and oral expression. 

Below you will find a list of the different certificates and their specificity:

  • Certificat de français professionnel: this is equivalent to a B1 level and certifies a correct level in a general professional context. 
  • Diplôme de français des affaires DFA 1: this is equivalent to a B2 and assesses the ability to cope with various common tasks in a business environment. 
  • Diplôme de français des affaires DFA 2: equivalent to a C1 and tests linguistic skills in the world of work and especially in dealing with socio-economic issues.
  • Diplôme approfondi de français des affaires DAFA: equivalent to a C2. In this test, you must do a research project with the aim of writing a report and presenting it. 
  • Certificat français des professions: assesses four domains specific to the world of work. It evaluates a level corresponding to level B1/B2 in the following professional fields:
  1. Certificat de français de secrétariat
  2. Certificat de français scientifique et technique (Certificate in scientific and technical French)
  3. Certificat de français de tourisme et de l'industrie (Tourism and industry French certificate)
  4. Certificat de français juridique
