ABOUT ME Hello, my name is Mariel and I'm a TEFL certified English tutor with 5+ years of experience. I am originally from Brazil and I currently live in São Paulo, which means I'm a native Portuguese speaker and English is my second language, so I understand the challenges students need to overcome. I started learning English as a young child, but have really become fluent after living and working in English-speaking countries. I have lived in the US twice, for a total of 2,5 years. I have also recently moved back from the UK, where I worked for 2 years in a British EdTech company. I'm 37 years old, I'm married and I live with my husband and our cat, Jimi. Besides teaching English, I'm also a singer here in Brazil, so if you're interested in music we could definitely work on some music-related topics to discuss in class. =) ABOUT OUR LESSONS I currently focus mostly on teaching American English to adults at beginner or intermediate level. Lessons will be tailored to your needs and learning style, and during our trial session we'll be able to discuss this further and put together a learning plan that works for you. I will ask you to take a placement test before our initial meeting as that will give me a quick glance at your current skills. During our first session I'll be able to further assess your needs, understand your goals and how I can help you achieve them. Having improved my communication skills while living abroad, I understand the importance of intensive speaking practice based on real-life situations, and I encourage my students to speak without the fear of being judged. I make sure my classroom is a welcoming and friendly environment where every student feels comfortable and confident to reach their full potential and goals. Being an English speaker has changed my life in so many ways that I love seeing my students progress, whether they're looking to boost their career, travel and explore the world or communicate with people from different cultures. ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE AS AN ENGLISH TUTOR I have taught English on and off for 5+ years in total, and I also recently got my TEFL Certificate. I first started teaching after coming back from the US the first time, in 2008. Since then, I have taught from young children to adults, both independently and in language schools. I also have experience conducting private and group lessons, which means I'm well equipped to help students from different backgrounds and with various learning styles and needs.
